How much electricity does a hot tub use per month?
In Mallorca at about 0.22 euros per kWh, held at 38 °C and used three times a week, an Essential 5-seater costs roughly 35 to 45 euros a month in summer and 60 to 80 in winter. A Premium model is 30 to 40 and 50 to 70 thanks to better insulation and the circulation pump, and a Signature 25 to 35 and 45 to 60. The better the series, the more of its price you get back over the years in electricity.
How can I keep running costs down?
Keep the cover on and in good condition, because most heat is lost from the surface; a cover lifter makes that effortless. Hold the temperature steady rather than reheating from cold, keep the spa out of the wind or behind a windbreak, and set filtration cycles to run at the cheapest hours of your tariff. A spa that is a degree or two cooler in summer, 36 instead of 38, also costs noticeably less.
Should the spa stay on all the time?
Yes. A hot tub is designed to run continuously, filtering a few hours a day and topping up heat as needed, and keeping 1,000 litres warm costs far less than heating it from cold every weekend. For a week away, leave it as it is; for a month or more, lower the set temperature to 25 to 30 °C and let the holiday check keep an eye on the water.
What about water and chemicals over a year?
A 5-seater holds around 1,150 to 1,400 litres and is changed three or four times a year, so water use is a few thousand litres annually, less than a small lawn. Chemicals are modest once the routine is set: a sanitiser, a calcium control for Mallorca's hard water and a test strip once a week. The starter kit at 160 euros covers the first months, and the UV and ozone upgrade at 590 euros cuts chlorine use after that.
